Court Documents Reveal That Johnson & Johnson was Aware of Link between Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer as early as 1992

August 4th, 2016

For more than 35 years, there have been suspicions in the medical community that long-term use of talcum powder on the genital area could be linked to an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. Numerous scientific studies have been published on this subject, and now thousands of women are coming forward to seek compensation because Johnson & Johnson failed to add warning labels to their talcum powder products.

So far in 2016, juries in two separate trials have ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay a total of $127 million in damages to women that developed ovarian cancer as a result of regular talcum powder use. During one of these trials, court documents revealed that Johnson & Johnson was aware of the possible link between use of Johnson’s Baby Powder® and cancer for decades, yet still chose not to add warning labels that might tarnish the reputation of their brand.

During the trial of Jaqueline Fox, an Alabama women who died of ovarian cancer in 2015 after a lifetime of using talcum powder, lawyers for the plaintiffs introduced internal Johnson & Johnson communications as evidence. One of these documents, a memo from 1992, acknowledged a possible linkage between Johnson’s Baby Powder® and cancer, but dismissed these concerns as “negative publicity.”

The jury in this trial found that J&J failed to warn consumers about the potential dangers of using their talcum powder products, and awarded $72 million in damages to the family of the plaintiff. There are more than 1,200 additional talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits currently pending against Johnson & Johnson.
