Digitek
Baltimore, Maryland
Digitek (also known as digoxin) is a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms. Digoxin is manufactured by Actavis Totowa, a division of Actavis Group, and distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. under the "Bertek" label and by UDL Laboratories, Inc. under the "UDL" label.
Negligence occurring during the manufacturing process has exposed individuals, particularly those with renal impairment, to serious risks of potentially fatal illness.
The Digitek Problem:
On April 28, 2008, Digitek was recalled nationally for all lots of the heart medication sold throughout the U.S. under the labels "Bertek" and "UDL". This recall affected almost half of all Digoxin sold in the U.S. The recall was a ‘Class 1 Recall’, meaning the product posed a serious risk of injury or death.
Apparently, a manufacturing defect caused these lots of Digitek to contain twice the correct amount of active ingredients, potentially leading to serious or fatal illnesses due to over-medication, particularly among individuals suffering from renal insufficiency. For these individuals, excessive amounts of digitalis could cause the potentially fatal illness, Digitalis Toxicity. In fact, it was several cases of Digitalis Toxicity that sparked the recall.
Various reports claimed the defective drug might have been sold to consumers for more than a year.
