FDA Warns That Antipsychotic Medication Abilify May Cause Impulse-Control Problems
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning that compulsive or uncontrollable urges to gamble, binge eat, shop, and have sex have been reported with the use of the antipsychotic drug Abilify.
Uncontrollable urges such as these were reported to have stopped when the medicine was discontinued or the dose was lowered. These impulse-control problems are rare, but they could result in harm to the patient and others if not recognized.
Abilify (aripirazole) is a popular antipsychotic medication used to treat psychological conditions including schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. Abilify is one of the top selling medications in the U.S and generated over $6 billion in sales in 2013 alone.
The FDA has linked the use of Abilify to the development of compulsive behaviors in patients. Possible side effects of Abilify use include:

- Compulsive eating
