In May 2009, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) cautioned American consumers to stop using Hydroxycut, a top-selling weight loss aid. The warning was issued after 23 reports of serious health problems and one death were directly linked to Hydroxycut use.

Hydroxycut Recall
After the FDA warning became public, the manufacturer of Hydroxycut, Iovate Health Sciences U.S.A., Inc., implemented a voluntary recall on 14 Hydroxycut products, including:
- Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
- Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
- Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
- Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
- Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
- Hydroxycut Hardcore Ready-to-Drinks
- Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
- Hydroxycut Carb Control
- Hydroxycut 24
- Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
- Hydroxycut Natural
The only Hydroxycut-branded products not included in the recall are Hydroxycut Cleanse and Hoodia products.
Health Problems Related to Hydroxycut
A majority of the serious health issues associated with Hydroxycut have to do with liver damage. Reports of health problems have ranged from elevated liver enzymes, which can make a patient feel very ill, to extensive liver damage that required a liver transplant.
Other health problems related to Hydroxycut include:
- Heart disorders
- Kidney failure
- Seizures
- Muscle damage
- Rhabdomyolysis
The health problems seem to be related to one of Hydroxycut's main ingredients, hydroxycitric acid.
Symptoms of Hydroxycut-Associated Liver Damage
If you have used Hydroxycut products and are exhibiting any of these signs, you should contact your doctor immediately:
- Abnormal bruising
- Yellow tint to the skin (jaundice)
- Swelling in the abdomen or legs
- Bruises and cuts that don't heal
