Shoulder Pain Pump (PAGCL)

Baltimore, Maryland

A shoulder pain pump is a small medical device designed to deliver pain medications, such as bupivacaine or epinephrine, directly into the shoulder joint through a catheter, a small flexible plastic tube.

Hundreds of patients across the U.S. use shoulder pain pumps to manage pain following arthroscopic shoulder surgery. However, the pumps may deliver too much medicine.

According to a study conducted by The American Journal of Sports Medicine, the shoulder pain pump is the cause of Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis, (PAGCL), a devastating condition characterized by:

  • Pain and stiffness of the shoulder joint
  • Shoulder pain both at rest and in motion
  • Stiffness of the shoulder
  • Weakness of the shoulder
  • Clicking, popping or grinding of the shoulder
  • Limited range of motion in the shoulder

Postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis is a condition causing shoulder cartilage to deteriorate, typically after surgery on the affected shoulder. As the cartilage deteriorates, the patient experiences pain, stiffness, weakness and limited range of motion.

The delivery of too much medicine into the shoulder via the shoulder pain pump catheter may be causing an increase in this rare, life-altering condition.

Shoulder Pain Pumps models involved include:

  • Stryker
  • Stryker PainPump 1
  • Stryker PainPump 2
  • PainPump Blockaid
  • Flow
  • On-Q Painbuster
  • Donjoy
  • Donjoy Pain Control Device
  • Accufuser Plus Pain Pump

Numerous lawsuits are pending against manufacturers, marketers and distributors of the pain pumps. Allegations claim manufacturers failed to instruct or warn the U.S. medical community of the fact that pain pump safety had not been established, and that permanent injury could result from continuous injections of commonly used anesthetics.
