Trasylol

Baltimore, Maryland

Trasylol is a blood clotting agent used during heart bypass, heart valve replacement, or other cardiac procedures. Trasylol was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for sale to the public in 1993. By 2005, sales of Trasylol were close to $300 million.

Unfortunately for Bayer AG, the manufacturer of Trasylol, the FDA determined that patients who received the drug were more likely to die from complications than were patients given similar drugs. Because of the FDA’s decision, Bayer AG suspended sales of Trasylol. Before that occurred, however, 14 years had passed and more than 4.5 million people had taken Trasylol worldwide, with as many as one third of all users located in the United States.

It was determined that Trasylol contributed to:

  • Strokes
  • Kidney failure
  • Heart attacks
  • Heart failure

Although similar drugs were available at a greatly reduced cost, Bayer AG aggressively marketed Trasylol, which cost patients as much as $1000 per prescription. While Bayer has not received any penalties from the FDA, individuals who were injured or died from taking the drug can obtain compensation by filing a personal injury claim to include compensation for such items as:

  • Physical pain and suffering
  • Mental anguish
  • Physical impairment
  • Loss of current and future medical expenses
  • Loss of earnings or loss of capacity to earn
  • Punitive damages for extreme negligence

If you or a loved one has been injured or lost their life due to Trasylol, you have a right under the law to claim damages in a personal injury lawsuit for defective prescription drugs and treatments. Your claim can include compensation for:

  • Negligence
  • Failure to warn
  • Strict liability for a defective product
