California Woman Sues Johnson & Johnson, Claims Company Failed to Warn that Talcum Powder Products May be Linked to Ovarian Cancer

Thousands of pending lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson allege that the company failed to warn their customers about the potential link between regular use of talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes and an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. The most recent talcum powder ovarian cancer case against Johnson & Johnson began this week in St. Louis, MO.

The Plaintiff in this case is a California woman that was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. She claims that she regularly used Johnson & Johnson products containing talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes, but was never warned that these products could be increasing her risk of developing ovarian cancer.

For decades, there have been suspicions among members of the medical community that the talc particles found in talcum powder could increase a patient’s risk of developing ovarian cancer. Since 1971, more than 20 scientific studies have been published on the subject, and the results have been troubling.

For example, the American Cancer Society estimates that a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer in her lifetime is about 1 in 75. Studies on the link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer have found that regular talc use for feminine hygiene purposes could increase that risk to approximately 1 in 53.

In February of 2016, a jury in St. Louis awarded $72 million in damages to the family of a woman that died at age 62 from ovarian cancer. In May, a second jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $55 million in damages to a South Dakota woman that developed ovarian cancer after a lifetime of talcum powder use. If the jury in this most recent case finds in favor of the Plaintiff, she will be the third woman to recover damages from Johnson & Johnson based on their failure to add warning labels to their talcum powder products.
