Complaint
A complaint is the court document that begins a civil lawsuit. It identifies the parties, states the factual allegations and legal claims, explains why the court has authority to hear the dispute, and requests relief. Filing a complaint is a formal allegation, not proof that the allegations are true. The defendant generally has an opportunity to answer, move to dismiss, or otherwise respond under the applicable rules.
