Deposition
A deposition is sworn testimony given outside the courtroom, usually during discovery. Lawyers ask questions, a court reporter creates a transcript, and the witness must answer truthfully subject to valid objections and privileges. Depositions help the parties learn facts, preserve testimony, assess credibility, and prepare for motions or trial. The testimony can sometimes be used later in court, including to challenge inconsistent statements.
