Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is brain dysfunction associated with inadequate oxygen and reduced blood flow around the time of birth. Signs can include abnormal alertness, poor tone, breathing difficulty, seizures, or organ problems. HIE has different severities and can have more than one cause. Evaluation may include the labor record, cord gases, newborn examinations, imaging, electroencephalography, organ function, and treatment. The diagnosis alone does not prove that the condition was preventable or caused by negligent care.
