Informed Consent

Informed consent is the process through which a patient receives information needed to make a voluntary decision about proposed care. Depending on the circumstances, the discussion can include the nature and purpose of the treatment, material risks, expected benefits, reasonable alternatives, and the option to decline. A signed form can document part of the process, but it does not always answer whether the discussion was adequate. The governing legal standard varies by jurisdiction and procedure.
