Umbilical Cord Prolapse
Umbilical cord prolapse occurs when the cord drops through the cervix alongside or ahead of the baby after the membranes rupture. The baby can compress the cord, reducing blood and oxygen flow. It is an obstetric emergency that can require immediate measures to relieve compression and rapid delivery. A legal review examines risk factors, recognition, fetal heart rate changes, response, decision-to-delivery timing, operative records, and whether any delay caused injury.
