Manufacturers of Antipsychotic Drug Risperdal® Ordered to Pay $70 Million in Damages

Risperdal® is an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and other mood disorders. Risperdal® has been linked to dangerous side effects in many users, particularly adolescent males suffering from serious psychological disorders.

Unfortunately, many Risperdal® users experienced severe and distressing side effects. One of the most common side effects of Risperdal® use is gynecomastia, a hormonal imbalance that causes adolescent males to develop female breast tissue.

Last month, a jury in Philadelphia found that manufacturers Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals failed to warn users about the potential risk of experiencing gynecomastia as a result of using Risperdal®. The jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $70 million in damages to a young man that developed female breasts as a result of taking Risperdal®.

This verdict marks the fifth time since February of 2015 that a jury has found that J&J failed to disclose the serious health risks associated with Risperdal® to consumers. However, this is by far the largest Risperdal® jury verdict against Johnson & Johnson. Approximately 1,500 Risperdal® cases against Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals are still pending.

Thousands of young men used Risperdal® because Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals marketed the drug to doctors as a safe and effective treatment for children suffering from bipolar disorder and Autism. By marketing Risperdal® for this off-label use, manufacturers Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson generated billions in corporate profits while jeopardizing the health and safety of their customers.
