Car Accidents in Maryland
Every year, over 100,000 people are hurt in traffic-related incidents across the state of Maryland. In many instances, people are harmed in crashes due to distracted drivers. Studies provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that there are three main types of distractions that affect drivers traveling throughout our state. These include:
- Visual Task Distractions: These distractions include circumstances that influence drivers to take their eyes off the road. Some examples include checking the navigation system, looking at the radio, or checking the passengers in the vehicles. This type of distraction involves acts of taking only your eyes off the road ahead.
- Manual Task Distraction: These are some of the most common and dangerous types of distractions. This category describes instances where drivers use cell phones, eat, drink, or engage in other activities that require them to take both their eyes and hands off the wheel.
- Cognitive Task Distractions: This is one of the most difficult types of distractions to catch or prevent. These actions are not physical by any means. Instead, cognitive task distractions are those which occur when the driver takes their mind off what they are doing. They can begin to daydream, think deeply about other tasks, or concentrate on things other than the road.
When drivers engage in actions that take their attention off the road ahead, they place the lives of others at risk. If you have been injured in an accident as a result of a distracted driver, or a driver who was engaging in another reckless action while operating their vehicle, you may have legal options available to help you get justice.
