September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and at The Yost Legal Group we want to help educate you on the causes and treatments of ovarian cancer, as well as provide resources for families that are dealing with this serious illness. By raising awareness and increasing education about ovarian cancer, we can all do our part to help prevent new cases from occurring in the future.
About Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer occurs when cells within the ovary begin to multiply and grow out of control, causing a growth called a tumor. While not all ovarian tumors are cancerous, if these growths spread or metastasize to the abdomen or other parts of their body, the results can be devastating. Unfortunately, if ovarian cancer is detected for the first time after it has already spread to other parts of the body, it is much more difficult to treat.
Ovarian cancer is the #5 most deadly form of female cancer, and will cause an estimated 14,000 deaths in 2016.
Support and Treatment
For patients and families that are faced with a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, it is important to remember that there are more treatment options available today than ever before. Like most forms of cancer, patients are far more likely to overcome ovarian cancer if it is caught and treated in its early stages. Medical options available to ovarian cancer patients include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy and more.
Additionally, there are many wonderful non-profit and charity organizations that have made it their mission to offer resources and support to women and families that are fighting ovarian cancer. Visit the web pages below for resources and additional information on ovarian cancer:

Risk Factors
While scientists are still working hard to determine what exactly causes ovarian cancer, there are certain behaviors and demographic factors that increase a women’s risk of developing the disease. First, ovarian cancer occurs most frequently in women ages 63 and over. Medical professionals advise women in this age group to speak with your doctor about ovarian cancer and undergo frequent screenings.
Other risk factors for developing ovarian cancer include:
- Smoking
- Use of an intrauterine device (IUD)
- Estrogen hormone replacement therapy
- Fertility treatments
- Other genetic factors
- Long term use of talcum powder on the genital area
Long-Term Use of Talcum Powder Increases Ovarian Cancer Risk
In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that regular use of talcum powder on the genital area is a major risk factor for developing ovarian cancer. More than 20 scientific studies dating back as far as 1971 have shown that regular use of talcum powder on the genital area may increase a women’s risk of developing ovarian cancer by up to 33%.
Many women used products such as Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower as part of their daily hygiene ritual. Unfortunately, manufacturer Johnson & Johnson chose not add warning labels to their products containing talcum powder warning women of the potential link to this serious and deadly form of cancer.
Now, thousands of women are coming forward to seek compensation for their pain and suffering. J&J is facing over 1,200 lawsuits alleging that it failed to properly warn its customers about the potential health risks of its talcum powder products. Since February of 2016, Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay more than $127 million in total damages to two women that have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using J&J products containing talcum powder.
