Bellwether Trial

A bellwether trial is an early trial selected from a larger group of similar lawsuits, often in multidistrict litigation. The case remains an individual lawsuit with its own facts and result. Its purpose is to test evidence, legal arguments, witness presentations, and possible jury reactions. Bellwether outcomes can inform later case management or settlement discussions, but they do not automatically determine the value or outcome of every other claim.
