Causation

Causation is the required connection between wrongful conduct and the injury claimed in a lawsuit. A plaintiff generally must show both factual cause and legal cause. In medical, toxic exposure, and product cases, causation can require specialized evidence about timing, biological mechanisms, dose, alternative explanations, and the person’s medical history. Proof that a mistake, exposure, or product problem occurred does not automatically prove that it caused a particular injury.
