Mandated Reporter

A mandated reporter is a person whom the law requires to report suspected child abuse or neglect to designated authorities. Covered roles and reporting procedures vary by jurisdiction and can include health care workers, educators, social workers, law enforcement officers, and others. The duty is generally triggered by suspicion or reasonable grounds, not proof. A civil case may examine whether a report was required, when concerns arose, and whether a failure to report contributed to further harm.
