Settlement

A settlement is an agreement that resolves some or all of a legal dispute without a final trial verdict on those issues. It can occur before suit, during litigation, at mediation, during trial, or on appeal. Terms may include payment, releases, confidentiality, structured payments, liens, or other obligations. A settlement is voluntary unless a legally authorized representative and court approval process apply, as can occur for minors or certain protected people.
