Underride Accident

An underride accident occurs when a smaller vehicle slides under the rear or side of a large truck or trailer. The height mismatch can allow the truck structure to enter the passenger compartment and can defeat some crash-protection systems. Investigation may address underride guards, conspicuity tape, lighting, braking, lane position, maintenance, federal standards, vehicle design, and reconstruction. The circumstances determine which drivers, carriers, manufacturers, or other parties may bear responsibility.
