ALERT: THE YOST LEGAL GROUP IS NOT TAKING ANY MORE MIRENA IUD CASES AT THIS TIME.

Defective Mirena IUD Linked to Vision Changes, Severe Headaches, and Memory Difficulties

Mirena is a popular intrauterine device (IUD) manufactured by Bayer Corporation. This T-shaped birth control device is implanted into a woman’s uterus to prevent fertilization.

Mirena also slowly releases levonorgestrel, a hormone found in many birth control pills, into the uterus.  Although the device prevents 99% of unwanted pregnancies, scientific studies have demonstrated that it causes serious and dangerous side effects.

The Dangers

Studies confirm that women using Mirena are 770% more likely to develop a serious medical condition known as Intracranial Hypertension (also known as Pseudotumor Cerebri). This dangerous condition results from an increased buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull. It causes symptoms similar to a brain tumor, including:

  • Optic nerve damage and vision changes, including temporary and permanent blindness
  • Severe migraine headaches
  • Loss of memory
  • Hearing Damage
  • Nausea, vomiting, and dizziness

Bayer’s Failure to Warn

The dangerous side effects of the hormone used in Mirena have been known since at least 1995 when a study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.  Subsequent studies have confirmed the harmful side effects caused by Mirena.

Beginning in 2009, the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sent Bayer multiple warning letters, telling the company that they were failing to adequately warn users of their product of the dangerous medical problems it can cause.  Bayer also failed to warn doctors.

A 2012 study found that nearly half of the doctors implanting the Mirena IUD in their patients were not informed by the device manufacturer of the risks associated with using this defective product.

By failing to warn patients and their doctors about the well-known risks of Mirena, Bayer has caused thousands of unsuspecting women to suffer serious injuries.

Do I Have A Case?

By withholding the serious nature of these adverse side effects, Bayer has dangerously misled thousands of women. If you or someone you know has suffered Intracranial Hypertension after implantation of Mirena, The Yost Legal Group may be able to help.
