Wright Conserve Cup Recalled

Manufactured by Wright Medical Group, the CONSERVE Cup hip replacement system was created and marketed with the intention of appealing to younger patients looking to live an active, high-impact lifestyle. While many hip replacement systems focus on serving older consumers who live and work at a slower pace, the CONSERVE Cup system promised increased durability, flexibility and faster recovery times. Unfortunately, Wright’s claims proved to be false and misleading.  The Wright CONSERVE Cup has caused patients more harm than good, as  like nearly all other metal-on-metal hip implant systems, the metal materials used to create the artificial implant has been shown to degrade, leading to painful metal poisoning and other problems. The normal functions and range of motion among patients who received the system caused the joints to shed metal particles into the surrounding muscle, bone and tissues. These metal particles increased the levels of certain metal compounds in the patient’s blood stream, and in many cases led to a serious medical condition known as Metallosis. Common side effects associated with Metallosis caused by the Wright CONSERVE Cup include:

  • Lingering pain in the hip joint where surgery was performed
  • Permanent limp and difficulty walking
  • Swelling in the hip joint where surgery was performed
  • Numbness in the leg, hip or surrounding area
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Changes in hearing or vision
  • Weight gain

Excessive failure rates

For a product that was marketed as the best option for younger patients with hip problems, the Wright CONSERVE Cup was actually extremely dangerous and problematic. These implants, which were designed and marketed with the intention of holding up over a decade of high-impact use, began failing only 3 years after the original surgery.

This product has been studied extensively, and all findings point to a higher than normal failure rate when compared to similar metal on metal hip replacement products. Over 200 types of device failures, including severe pain in the hip and groin, loosening or detachment of the device, and high metal toxicity in the blood stream, have been reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). When manufacturers of metal-on-metal hip replacement systems promise results to patients which they cannot deliver, they put thousands of consumers at risk, and they must be held accountable.

Younger patients who receive hip replacement surgery should be able to look forward to years of activity with their new joint, and should not have to deal with costly and painful revision surgeries soon after their original surgery. When corporations and manufacturers produce, market and distribute defective products, they must be held accountable.
